Here is what you can expect from me as your therapist: 1) a warm and trusting relationship that allows you to talk about anything and everything in a safe space 2) a space in which you feel heard and attended to, where both important and minor details are remembered and returned to in an effort to examine the full picture over time. 3) genuine feedback that will help you examine yourself and your patterns closely, often providing a new way of understanding yourself and your struggles, and 4) respect for your background and identities, the pace at which you’re comfortable sharing, and your personal goals for therapy. If you have concerns in one or more of the following areas we might be a good fit: adjustment/transitions, relationships and family, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, postpartum/perinatal issues, and/or identity development. I also work with less specific concerns, such as those who are unsatisfied and unsure why. In addition to being a licensed psychologist in DC, I am an adjunct professor and clinical supervisor in the psychology department at the University of Maryland. My research has been published in multiple journals in the field, and I have experience in a variety of settings, including extensive experience with college and graduate students.

Dr. McNeill is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) specializing in family medicine and psychiatry, with expertise in various mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and eating disorders. Her educational background includes a PhD in Human Services with a focus on Health Care Administration from Capella University, an MSN in family practice from the University of South Alabama, an MBA and BsIT from AIU, and a BSN from Emory University. With over a decade of experience as an assistant professor, she has taught across various healthcare programs at both the bachelor's and master's levels, covering fields such as Gerontology, Healthcare Administration, Management, and Nursing. Professionally, Dr. McNeill has dedicated over a decade to healthcare leadership, serving as a practicing clinician and educator. She has received recognition as Director of the Year from the International Nurses Association (INA) for her outstanding contributions to community care.
My orientation toward counseling is a strengths based approach, where focusing on resiliency and building upon one's abilities are an essential part of managing conflict and confusion. As a black queer woman working within both for-profit and non-profit spaces for over 10 years, I became increasingly aware of the need for dedicated restorative and affirming safe spaces for BIPOC and Queer folx. Thus, at Growth Explored my intention is to curate an environment that not only allows individuals to observe their own thoughts and feelings as relates to their behavior but additionally understand how external factors such as discrimination impact response to and perceptive of life experiences. Life continually brings new challenges and successes to us: life events and circumstances that can contribute to periods of serious distress – but also potentially meaningful personal growth. This can certainly apply to those who are on a path toward achieving a degree - adjusting to new things: a degree program, city, roommates, & even ways of learning (including online classes & COVID-sensitive campus life). This also can be a time in life when past challenges can crop up again - vestiges of trauma, social anxieties, family of origin issues, etc. In addition to doing traditional talk therapy, I also conduct mind-body skills groups in which we practice in a small group setting a nice overview of techniques that can help you cope with just about anything: meditation, guided imagery, mindfulness, relaxation, etc. I incorporate these into our individual work, too, but I often recommend one of these 6-week groups to lay the foundation. Past clients have described me as someone who really listened and conveyed sincere concern, but who was also not afraid to say what they needed to hear. If you work with me, I will partner with you to identify your strengths and to empower you along the way to greater insight. We will always look for hope and positivity even when they may be hard to find. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I love using non-traditional methods such as listening to music, reading poetry, even being silly when we could use a laugh.

I specialize in working with young adult women who are navigating trauma, burnout, and big life changes. Using EMDR and CBT, I help you process past experiences, break free from negative thought patterns, and build confidence in who you are.
