I work with young adults and adults who are struggling with a range of mental health concerns. I specialize in supporting individuals with eating disorders, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and trauma-related concerns. I take an integrative approach, tailoring evidence-based interventions to meet the client’s individual needs and drawing from my experience as both a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and licensed art therapist (ATR). I aim to help my clients achieve meaningful change with an eclectic combination including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), radically-open DBT, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and enhanced CBT, motivational interviewing, and art therapy, among others. Within this integrative framework, I hold a person-centered and trauma-informed lens and offer compassion, humor and directness to my clients. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is an essential foundation for growth and change, and I strive to create a space that is collaborative, warm, and accepting.

For more than 20 years, I have provided therapy to individuals, couples and groups, as well as offering training, consultation and clinical supervision to community organizations. My work centers around bridging transitions, fostering personal growth and developing compassionate responses and strategies to address life’s challenges. In addition to providing support and encouragement, I will challenge you to think critically about the choices you are making and to work toward overcoming the obstacles that may be keeping you from achieving your goals. Whether you’re trying to learn something new, working on making a transition, or building your support network, you have a lot of choice about how and with whom you work on achieving your goals. There are therapists and other service providers to appeal to everyone’s personal style. Taking the time to find a professional who is not only credentialed, but who has an approach or philosophy that resonates with you is an important first step. My approach to everything that I do is to be as real as I can be. Whether I’m working with an individual in a therapy session, presenting to a large audience or collaborating on a community project, I’ve never been someone who is good at faking it. What you see is what you get. I hold myself to the same standards to which I hold my clients—authenticity and honesty are essential. I provide my clients with an accurate reflection of what I see and a professional assessment of how they might do things differently. I will challenge you to think critically about the choices you make and the impact those choices are having on your life. I rely heavily on resources that foster creativity and humor. I don’t rely on gimmicks or hidden agendas—if I’ve got information or tools that will help you, I will share them with you and encourage you to make them your own. As a therapist, I work hard to be flexible and responsive to the needs of my clients. There may be times when you feel you need more encouragement and support and less constructive feedback. Other times you may find that confronting an issue head-on feels more productive. I will encourage both of us to be patient with the process and to pay close attention to progress so that we can make adjustments throughout our work together. My areas of expertise include: mindfulness and meditation; strategies for coping with depression and anxiety; issues around sexuality, sexual functioning and relationships; sexual and gender identity; social skills; trauma; grief; substance use; attention training and living with uncertainty and change. To find out more about me, check out my website at www.jennbrandel.com, or call me to set up an initial consultation to see if we may be able to work together effectively.

I takes an integrative approach to treatment by using evidence-based intervention and person-centered strategies specifically tailored to the clients’ individual needs in order to promote growth and meaningful change in clients. I am particularly interested in treating individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, bipolar and trauma-related issues. I aim to support clients with their mental health journey by incorporating principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) skills, motivational interviewing, trauma informed therapy, and strength-based framework. In order to aid clients in their pursuit of living a healthier and happier life, I establish a genuine and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship by providing empathy, acceptance, validation and unconditional positive regard. I focus on treating individuals with respect and integrity when they are at their most vulnerable. I also have a passion for working with athletes. I value bringing mental health support to sports. I focus on the emotional wellbeing of high-performing athletes in order for them to reach the next level of performance. I help athletes build resiliency and navigate the troubles of playing sports, including managing perfectionism, preventing burnout, and building mental toughness. This passion for aiding high-performers blossomed at University of Central Arkansas’ Counseling Center where I worked directly with student-athletes providing individual counseling and support to multiple sports teams. Prior to becoming a counselor, I was an assistant coach for women’s soccer and lacrosse at Hendrix College where she was able to assist student-athletes on and off the field.

I have worked with college students struggling with a wide range of difficulties and acuity over the past decade plus, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship difficulties. I have a casual yet professional style, and prioritize creating a warm, non-judgmental space where clients can increase awareness of their emotional and relational patterns. I pull from several orientations, including psychodynamic/relational, emotion-focused, CBT, acceptance-based, and compassion-based approaches in order to make sense of your difficulties with you and to identify ways to change, or as is the case in the many situations that we can’t change, learn to relate to it differently. My clients express appreciation for my transparent, collaborative, compassionate, and well-informed approach. I am interested and have experience in working with clients from diverse backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities. I try to understand clients in context and I seek to bring in societal issues and -isms to understand clients experiences in the world. I am open to talking about my own identity and position in society. I have openings for telehealth clients located in Massachusetts, NC, or any participating Psypact state. I accept Aetna in MA. I accept Aetna and BCBS in NC. Please email me if you would like to schedule a free initial call to answer any questions and assess whether we may be a good match.
