My academic journey has taken me to many different countries, and I am passionate about combining my interest in western psychology with the ancient wisdom of Buddhist psychology. I earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Canterbury University, New Zealand (2009) and her master’s degree in motivational psychology from the University in Zurich, Switzerland (2012). She also holds an additional master's degree from Naropa University in contemplative psychology. I bring my unique blend of experiences to her work. Among other adventures, I have worked in Zanskar Valley in Ladakh, Northern India and has studied psychology in Nepal, Indian. I have also taught Yoga and Yoga therapy to athletes. I take a trauma informed approach to therapy, combining her training in Somatic Experiencing with other contemplative approaches as well as elements of IFS, Polyvagal, solution focused therapy, and positive psychology. These days, students face difficult decisions and life situations and must navigate complicated futures and relationships. I specialize in working with young people who are struggling with these things and want to find better ways to cope. Frequently, I see students who are good at solving complex problems. On the other side of this advantage, they sometimes suffer from perfectionism, anxiety, depression, or relationship problems. When addressed, these conditions can be alleviated. I offer therapy for students dealing with: depression, anxiety, grief, and relationship issues, and EMDR for those recovering from traumatic and life disturbing experiences. I also teach practical skills utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy on mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. Welcome! I am an LCSW with 29+ years experience specializing in trauma. I have been in private practice for 21 years and I worked in residential treatment and inpatient psychiatric hospitals with adolescents prior to this. I am licensed in CO, WA, OR and NY.
I have been working in the outpatient setting for over 10 years. I've rotated through a student mental health clinic during my training and have worked with many college aged students. College can be an exciting time of change and growth and finding purpose and connection. College can also be a big adjustment, as you acclimate to a new setting, new responsibilities and being away from home for an extended period, sometimes for the first time. It is often during these big life changes that you may need a little extra help settling in, getting into new routines. Through a combination of therapy and careful use of medication, we can work on getting you in a place to fully engage in and enjoy your college experience.
I believe being a student and learning is an opportunity, and sometimes having a consistent therapist alongside can make the difference and help you get the most out of the opportunity. Being in school is not a singular thing, it’s not just about being the student in class who does assignments and gets the grade. In addition to being a student, there is one’s mental, physical, and emotional health, there are often bills to pay, and often the needs of others to meet. There are many other parts of ourselves and our lives that intersect with and function together with being in school. It can be overwhelming. It can be an adjustment. Transitions are big and important. There are our lives both in and out of school. Students are often also family members, caregivers, working individuals, or living with loss, trauma, depression, stress, or a medical illness. Students also learn differently, including some with accommodations for success. Some students find they need to confront an overwhelming need for perfection, or perhaps one is facing a particular challenge that is important to look at rather than look away. Therapy can be helpful when you are in school. I like to meet a client where they are at and begin by understanding you. I offer my warmth, and capacity to listen and to hold space even when the workable feels unworkable. I offer my experience and knowledge in counseling and in the creative art therapies, and hold value in an inclusive and affirmative lens. I enjoy working with students in higher education, meeting them in the places where school intersects with other parts of self that must be given care and attention, or to look more closely at or develop one’s career journey. I employ both talk therapy and the use of creative, expressive processes such as movement, poetry, art, music, story, and metaphor.
