Therapists for college students near Georgia State University
Hello! Thank you for viewing my profile. I am a psychologist specializing in adolescent/young adult psychology. My approach is client-centered, cognitive behavioral, and strengths-based. I believe that empathy, compassion, and unconditional positive regard are the core of therapeutic relationship.
Hi, I’m Tamika Grimes, a licensed professional counselor with over 18 years of experience supporting teens, adults, and professionals through life’s challenges. I use Cognitive Behavioral and Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients understand how their thoughts impact their behaviors and guide them toward lasting change. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, empowered, and equipped to grow.
Are you struggling with drugs and/or alcohol, or maybe with managing your anger? Being here, you've already taken the courageous step of seeking professional help for an issue you are experiencing. I know this must be tough. You were probably debating seeking help for months, if not years, I'm glad you are here to work with you and for you. To help get your life back on the course you want it to be on and allow you to rediscover what brings you joy and happiness in your life. With 15 years+ in working with individuals with alcohol and drug addictions, I specialize in alcohol and drug counseling and evaluations in addiction. I also specialize in anger management evaluations. I provide a safe and welcoming environment to assist you with your life challenges.
I primarily work with individuals struggling with compulsive behavior, including sex/porn addiction, codependency, internet/social media addiction, and problem spending/debting. Addiction is meant to make you feel less. It provides temporary numbing for lifelong pain. You feel trapped, depressed, angry, anxious, guilty, and afraid when you can't stop. Recovering from compulsive behavior, though not easy, is possible and has been accomplished many times. But it does require a complete change in beliefs and attitude, along with how to deal with life and its problems. Getting out of your head and taking action is the next indicated step. Listen to your mind and body - it's time to stop treating yourself so badly. I can help you learn to help yourself. You can become your own best advocate. All are welcome in my office, including those from BIPOC and LGBTQIA communities.
As a college student or mid-career professional, trauma is the last thing you want to talk about. You wake up and take care of yourself. You go to class, go to work, clean your apartment, take care of your dog, go to the gym. You’re doing more than surviving- by many definitions, you are thriving! However, most people don’t know your story. A part of you feels grateful for your life, but another part wonders, "How would life be different if the (trauma) never happened to me?" You’re ready to let go of shame and guilt. You’re ready to transform trauma into a tool for meaningful change. You’re ready to renew your life. I encourage you to email me, or visit my website to learn more and schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation: www.RenewTherapyGA.com/get-started Do you have insurance? I work with clients navigating major life changes, managing anxious thoughts, and overcoming self-doubt. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a core approach, I help you explore how your thoughts influence your emotions and overall experience. Together, we’ll identify the patterns holding you back and develop strategies to challenge those thoughts.
In a world that often values toughness, being a highly sensitive and soft-hearted person can feel like a burden. We might say “yes” when we really mean “no”. And we may feel like we have to act differently to fit in, even if it means putting others before ourselves. Sometimes it can feel tough to find our inner courage, speak up for what we want, and create positive boundaries. This can be especially true when we’re striving for success in our careers, supporting our loved ones emotionally, or navigating big life changes. Through brainspotting, mindfulness, and somatic techniques, we’ll gently uncover the patterns that have kept you feeling stuck and build the self-trust needed to honor your own needs. As you release emotional weight and reconnect with yourself, you’ll cultivate resilience, confidence, and a deeper sense of balance in your life. If you’re ready to embrace your sensitivity, set healthier boundaries, and reconnect with yourself, I’m here to help. Let’s work together to create a life that feels balanced, authentic, and fulfilling. Reach out today to begin your journey toward healing and growth.

I graduated from The University of Georgia in 2011 with my masters in counseling; I worked as a staff therapist, suicide prevention coordinator, and disability services coordinator at Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College respectively before going into private practice. I'm passionate about helping college students as they juggle demands and make major relationship and career decisions - it is a unique and overwhelming stage of life. I'm located near Charleston where I'm offering sessions via telehealth to GA & SC residents. Counseling can help improve communication between loved ones, support individuals adjusting to major life transitions, or develop coping skills to better manage emotions that have become distressing. I'm grateful you had the courage to explore counseling. Life is stressful at times and we can all use a safe place to receive support and feedback. It is my belief that each person has inherent value, and my goal is to encourage individuals to see their worth and facilitate them in making decisions they can reflect on with peace.

A therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan, with interventions tailored specifically to your needs. We believe that you should be heard, and we take supporting you very seriously. In the African American community, we are haunted by intergenerational trauma that shapes how we view and operate within the world. By increasing the frequency with which people of color pursue therapy, we work to break the cycle of trauma and aid you in beginning a new family tradition of mental health. We are honored to work to be a part of this change! Our number one priority is the health and safety of our clients. We're working to provide telehealth services via zoom during this COVID crisis.
