Therapists for college students near Rice University
I am a patient, compassionate, non-judgmental helping professional who understands struggle and uncertainty. I believe that people are generally doing their best, and that growth and change can be difficult, uncomfortable, and scary. I think that having someone help you navigate through times of uncertainty, sit with you in your struggles, and challenge your beliefs and behaviors can be instrumental in understanding how and why your behavior patterns are contributing to your distress and preventing you from moving forward. I approach counseling from an interpersonal attachment-based perspective, in that I believe relational issues are the driving force behind our emotions, motivations, and behaviors. I specialize in working with clients who struggle with substance use and abuse, specifically individuals who work in the service and hospitality industries. I also have experience counseling clients with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, borderline personality disorder, and relationship difficulties. I received my Masters in Counseling from Loyola University New Orleans and I am a provisionally licensed professional counselor. I find inspiration personally and professionally in the works of Brené Brown, Irvin Yalom, Gabor Maté, and Thich Nhat Han. I counsel individuals, groups, and couples. I respect everyone's individuality and do not discriminate against anyone.
Perhaps one of the hardest decisions in life is to seek help. You are used to handling everything yourself, but you don’t have to do this alone. We all encounter challenges and/or disadvantages at one point in life, and it is easy to feel discouraged and criticize yourself in this process. Although these difficulties can affect you in profound and painful ways, I believe that they are also opportunities to learn about yourself—acknowledge what is not working and find what will work. This journey is quite exhausting for one person, so I aim to become a part of your support system. As a counselor, I hope to empower each individual to make personal choices that will allow them to discover confidence, direction, happiness, peace, and healing. My role as a therapist is to, first and foremost, create a safe space for your stories to be heard and understood. I will listen to your experiences with compassion, warmth, curiosity, hope, respect, and trust. I believe in genuineness and transparency in the therapeutic relationship, so I will communicate directly yet gently. I offer a collaborative and individualized therapeutic process that allows you to accomplish your goals. In other words, my approach to counseling varies based on what is the best fit for each client. I use creative methods to increase self-awareness and self-reflection (e.g. mindfulness, writing, drawing, music, poetry, activities) because I believe each person has a unique medium of expression. Your commitment to change is also monumental in this process because you are the expert on your life. I will be there as a guide to help you uncover your true potential. I hold a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Southern Methodist University. I work with older adolescent and adult individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, interpersonal/relationship issues, OCD, ADHD, grief and loss, trauma/PTSD, LGBTQIA+ related issues, transition and change, anger management, stress management and self-care, social justice issues, and low self-confidence. As an Asian American woman, I celebrate diversity and welcome people from all backgrounds.

Hi there. I work with teens and adults through complex trauma, relationships, life transitions, grief, anxiety and depression (to name a few). I also work with the marginalized in our communities, BIPOC, disabled, persons with chronic/rare illness and LGBTQ+. My practice is open to all. If you are feeling stuck or unsure about your next steps, I can help. I practice by getting in touch with our nervous systems as we navigate life's hardships. I use emotionally focused therapy and some somatic work. Get in touch should you need an empathetic person to walk side by side with you or if you would like to gain skills to help communicate with others.

There's an exhaustion and isolation that often come with mental health struggles. It’s easy to feel trapped in a cycle, simultaneously yearning for change and fearing it – especially when the cycle involves suicidal ideation, self-harm, substance use, addiction, or disordered eating. They all become ingrained in one's identity, making the idea of letting go terrifying. I want my clients to know there's more to them than their struggles. I'm here to support and guide them as they uncover their resilience and empowerment underneath the depression, anxiety, bipolar, trauma, and PTSD. I meet my clients where they are, simultaneously holding space for their emotions, thoughts, and current behaviors; all while gently guiding them out of the patterns that have been keeping them stuck. My goal is to strike a balance in our time together, seamlessly blending acceptance and change strategies to ensure a comprehensive and supportive experience. If you’re ready to discover your authentic self underneath self-destructive tendencies, please reach out. You deserve to live a life in which you are excited to participate—not just a life you passively tolerate. That life is out there, waiting for you. I would love to walk alongside you on your journey to help you take hold of it.

Hi, my name is Katie and I started Rise Up Therapy seven years ago to create a safe space for clients to explore all the different parts of themselves. I love working with college students where life can get overwhelming fast. College is a powerful time for self-growth, and my approach is warm, relational, and practical, creating a safe space where you feel seen and supported. I use a gospel-centered framework when desired, while respecting where you are in your faith, and focus on building self-awareness, healthy boundaries, and coping tools for daily life. I’m trained in EMDR and support students processing trauma, chronic stress, and life transitions so they can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Do you ever feel unheard, unseen, or misunderstood? Maybe even hurt by cliche responses you hear in your life such as “everything happens for a reason,” or “everything will be ok” or “you’re strong and you’ll get through this.” Are you feeling anxious or overthinking and playing scenarios in your mind? Questioning whether if this is the right decision and how it would impact your life? Worried about disappointing others as expectations were placed upon you. Or wondering if this is the right degree program for me? Maybe not recognizing yourself anymore. Overwhelmed by the pressure of life that it's difficult to be motivated. Not knowing what the future holds can be a scary feeling. I would like to come alongside you on this journey to help you to have a renewed and empowered life. Imagine being free from shame or guilt to be who you want to be. To feel confident in your decision making. Being able to let go of others' expectations that were placed on you. To be able to live in the present moment and be at peace of the unknown. You can expect to walk away from our sessions feeling heard, validated, and encouraged. If you are looking for someone that relates to you as an Asian American, or a first generation college student/graduate, please reach out to book a free 15 minute phone consultation to get to know a little about each other and ask any questions you may have. We offer trauma informed therapy for children, teens, and adults, in-person in South Austin, telehealth available to all Texas residents. I specialize in helping women in their 20s and 30s who are struggling with anxiety in relationships and sex, or those who are processing past sexual trauma or toxic relationships. Many of my clients notice patterns or traits within themselves which are impacting their relationships and intimacy, leaving them feeling disconnected and at a loss for what might help. In addition to my work with adults, I also enjoy working with children and adolescents (ages 3-18), especially those who are neurodivergent or highly sensitive. With a background as a Preschool Teacher, a Registered Behavior Technician working with children on the Autism Spectrum, and as a long-time babysitter, I am able to connect deeply with young people to help them feel understood. My personal experience growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, which manifested as an inability to regulate my emotions, extreme sensitivity, and emotional outbursts, informs this work. I approach this work as an opportunity to nurture my own inner child and offer the support I wish I’d had growing up. I utilize a client-centered, strengths-based approach to play therapy in order to help the children I work with feel safe to express themselves authentically. My approach is compassionate and trauma-informed, integrating Nervous System Regulation, Somatic Experiencing, Attachment Theory, and Trauma-Informed Care to help you rebuild trust in yourself and cultivate healthier relationships. My priority is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel comfortable exploring your emotions and experiences without judgment. In our work together, we’ll explore your past and present, identify patterns, and create a plan for healing.
